CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - An American hero from the Vietnam War was in Hattiesburg this Patriot Day, to learn more about other heros who've served our state in time of war. Medal of Honor recipient and Navy SEAL Thomas Norris visited the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby for the first time Sunday afternoon.

Norris, who lives in Idaho, was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing two downed pilots in Vietnam in 1972.

He also visited Jackson this morning, to take part in a Patriot Day prayer service for the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

"Of course, it's a very sad day and I believe it's something we should recall," Norris said. "I think we need to be reminded that the threat is out there and thankfully, our military is keeping it safe for us," said Norris.

Norris didn't receive his medal of honor until 1976.
