Jackson County To Buy New Voting Machines

Jackson County will buy new voting machines as recommended by local election commission members. On Monday, supervisors approved negotiating with the low bidder, ES&S of Alabama, for a final cost of about $270,000 for new scanner machines. The county is receiving a rebate on the old machines.

"I think the touch-screen technology is probably a few years away and we need equipment that will perform now," said Supervisor Frank Leach.

Ben Sanford, chairman of the county election commission, said the commission wanted to keep the technology the county has now, a machine that scans paper ballots the voter feeds into it at the precinct.

He said commission members thought the machines are easy to use, familiar and meet the federal requirement to give voters a chance to correct any technical errors they might have made that would cancel their votes. Sanford said the scanning machine won't accept an improperly marked ballot.
