Tropical Storm Lee brings out shoppers

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Many coast residents are preparing for Tropical Storm Lee by stocking up food, water, batteries and other essentials in case of an emergency. Like a lot of stores across South Mississippi, the check out lines were packed Friday night at the Walmart in Biloxi.

Shoppers like the Buryns are racing against the clock, hoping to get everything they need before the storm touches down on the coast.

"We're here just to get some basic supplies, trying to prepared for the storm coming in," Kazimier Buryn said.

"Honestly, we hear it's going to be 18 inches of rain. But we want to be prepared just in case it gets worse," Karen Buryn said.

Management said throughout the day, items like bread, water and non-perishables have been flying off the shelves.

Though reluctant to give in to the hype, the Buryns said they'd rather be safe than sorry. That's why their list consists of everything from a jumbo cooler to...

"Some rope, water, emergency supplies, candles, batteries, canned food."

Across the street at Winn Dixie, there was also an influx of shoppers. But some folks were singing a different tune.

"I was one mile off the beach in Ocean Springs at St. Andrews when Katrina hit and lost everything. So after that, I'm not too worried about this one," said Bud King.

"I'm kind of hanging out at the grocery store, picking up some items just for tonight. So I guess I'm not as worried as I should be," Sharon Copin. "But I'm not from here so, I guess I better start worrying."

And these shoppers have a little advice for everyone.

"Hope everybody stays safe and listens to WLOX. I keep up with Rob Knight on Facebook, so that's how I've been knowing what's going on," King said.

This will be the first Tropical Storm the Buryns have ever experienced. Kazimier said at the end of the day, you never know what to expect.  That's why he's choosing to play it safe.

"You can never be too prepared. You're better off to have stuff that you don't need instead of wishing that you had gone and done something about it when it's too late."
