Local Judge Becomes Work Of Art

A host of family, friends, and colleagues gathered for the portrait unveiling of U.S. Magistrate Judge John Roper, Sr., which will hang in the lobby of the new courthouse.

Judge Roper was appointed his position in 1975, and he is the longest continuously serving federal magistrate judge in the United States.

WLOX asked the judge his thoughts of his image captured on canvas.

"Despite the subject matter, I think it came out really nice. I'm thrilled with the artist's work," said Roper.

Mrs. Cecile Higdon Stephens painted the portrait.

She is the Coast's leading portrait artist, having painted several of the portraits for judges at the state and federal level.
