BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - The Gulf Coast Claims Facility is closing its office in Bay Saint Louis. WLOX News has confirmed that the office will close September 1st. The office in St. Martin will remain open.
Claims are still being filed but the numbers are dwindling, hence the closing of several offices.
Just this week, Kenneth Feinberg, the attorney who oversees the BP oil spill claims process, said the GCCF has paid out $5 billion in damages. And that in the past 12 months, nearly one million oil spill claims were filed.
Since opening a year ago this week, the GCCF has received claims from all 50 states and 36 countries.
Claimants not satisfied with the decision of the GCCF can appeal their case to the U.S. Coast Guard for an independent review. So far, more than 1,100 cases have gone through that appeals process.
