OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - An Ocean Springs art studio owner has started an innovative campaign called the Painted Bra Art Project.
People paint bras, donate them to the project and they will be auctioned off to help raise money for breast cancer research.
The effort is on Facebook and the Painted Bra Art Project has really taken off.
Pamela Wilson is a breast cancer survivor who has a sense of humor about a very serious subject.
On her painted bra, "I'm going to write, 'Roses are red, Violets are blue, I beat breast cancer, and so can you.'"
Wilson and others have gathered at Glazie Dayz Art Studio in Ocean Springs to spend the day painting bras.
"We have a saying that you don't have to be an artist to be a 'bratist.' Anybody can paint a bra. You just need inspiration dedicated to someone affected by breast cancer," said Susi Hemphill, the heart and soul behind the project and the owner of the studio.
Hemphill said the bra painting concept has taken off, and hundreds of colorful bras have been donated. Eventually, they will be auctioned off to raise money for breast cancer research.
Eighteen-year-old Kate Rushton has poured creativity into several painted bras.
"It's an opportunity to do something that helps other people," Rushton said. "It's for a great cause. It's been a fun experience."
Hemphill said, for her, it's very personal.
"Both my mother and my sister were diagnosed with breast cancer this year. As of a couple of weeks ago, they won the battle."
September 3rd, put it on your calendar, Glazie Dayz will host a bra painting party. The New Saints Cheerleaders, the Saintsations will be there and everyone will be able to paint a brasterpiece for the project.
Meanwhile you can go to Facebook, and search for the Painted Bra Art Project to learn more about this project.
