GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Investigators believe a 19-year-old Gulfport man intentionally started a fire at an abandoned building on Arkansas Avenue Thursday afternoon. Friday, Gulfport Police announced that they had arrested Devonta Caldwell and charged him with Arson.

Gulfport Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt said fire fighters responded to the blaze that broke out around 4:40 Thursday afternoon. According to Beyerstedt, responders were able to put the fire out quickly.

The building, which belongs to the neighboring Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church, remains intact. Because the building has no power or utilities, arson was immediately suspected.

Witnesses were able to describe someone leaving the scene of the fire. Officers spotted Caldwell walking nearby, and found he matched the description of their suspect.

He's being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

Roads near Highway 90 and Highway 63 in Pascagoula opened this morning. Police removed barricades at 3:15 a.m. after experts determined a chemical leak no longer posed a threat. Emergency teams determined an empty rail car was the source of that leak. They tell WLOX News Now they contacted Chevron officials to make the necessary repairs.
