GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Arson is believed to be the reason an abandoned building went up in flames on Arkansas Avenue in north Gulfport. Gulfport Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt says fire fighters responded to a blaze that broke out around 4:40 Thursday afternoon.
According to Beyerstedt, responders were able to put the fire out quickly, and the building remains intact. He says it appears the fire started on the second floor.
The two story structure belongs to the neighboring Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
The Chief says that because the building is abandoned, and there are no utilities or power inside, it is likely arson caused the fire.
The fire is under investigation.
