PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Pearl River County Emergency Operations Center has set up a hotline for residents concerned about the fish kill on the Pearl River. The number is (601) 749-7709. The information will be limited to Pearl River County and should only be used by residents.
On Wednesday, the Ross Barnett Reservoir released 200,000 gallons of water per minute to help dilute chemicals or whatever else is in the Pearl River killing marine life by the hundreds.
Pearl River County Emergency Operations Director Danny Manly said the reservoir was already at extremely low levels, so the county is very grateful for their cooperation right now.
Officials are still testing water samples to determine whether a Bogalusa, Louisiana paper mill is to blame for dumping a chemical called "black liquor."
For now, officials are telling those who fish in the Pearl River not to eat any of the fish until environmental officials determine the water is safe.
