JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Jackson County property owners must pay their 2010 property taxes by Friday, August 26, 2011, to prevent their parcel from being included in the County's annual Land Tax Sale.
"There is still time left, property owners have two weeks remaining," Jackson County Tax Collector Joe Tucker explained. "It's important to remember, all prior or back taxes for a piece of property must be paid before the owner can pay for current taxes."
Tucker says once a parcel is sold at the tax sale, the original property owner has a two year redemption period to pay the taxes plus interest (1.5% per month) through the Chancery Clerk's office. If payment occurs, the "tax sale purchaser" will be reimbursed their initial tax payment plus the interest.
All bidders are required to register for the Tax Sale in person at the Tax Collector's Main Office (3104 Magnolia Street, Pascagoula). Registration will start on August 22 and continue through the end of the sale. There is no registration fee, but bidders should be prepared to complete a W-9 form and present a current drivers license, social security number or Tax ID number.
The list of delinquent property taxes will be published in The Mississippi Press on August 18 and again on August 25.
The Tax Sale will begin Monday, August 29 and be held weekdays from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the lobby of the County Courthouse. The Tax Sale will continue until all property taxes are sold.
A form of payment (check, cash, MasterCard, VISA or Discover cards) is required prior to bidding and all transactions must be paid in full after the tax sale or within two business days after the sale.
The 2010 property tax billing statements were mailed last November and were due in February. Property owners who pay their taxes through a home's mortgage or other types of loans do not receive a statement.
All prior taxes for a parcel must be paid at the Chancery Clerk's Land Records Office at the Fairgrounds in Pascagoula (2902 Shortcut Rd.) To find out the current amount due call the Tax Collector's Office at (228) 769-3072 or go to the Tax Collector page on the County's website, www.co.jackson.ms.us/officials/tax-collector.
