Cooking Classes For Seniors

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

A cooking class for people 55 and older teaching them to cook on a budget was put on by the city of Biloxi at the Donal Snyder Center on Wednesday.

Dawn Vosbein of the Mississippi State Extension Service and Gwen Johnson of the city of Biloxi taught seniors how to prepare a stove top dinner without breaking the bank.

They are trying to help the seniors shop for and prepare nutritious small meals at a reasonable cost.

They are teaching them to get away from fast foods and into a healthier eating habit.

"I do my own cooking. It's too expensive to eat out, so I prefer to prepare my own meals at home," class attendee Chuck Weaver said. "I am always looking for ways to prepare new things."

Maureen Broussard, class attendee, said, "You don't have anyone to cook for. So I tend to not eat properly, and with the health problems that I have had, it is more important that I get back to healthy eating, if I want to feel well for the rest of my life."

The city of Biloxi hopes to offer more of these senior cooking classes in the future.
