OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Despite the morning showers, people hit the streets of downtown Ocean Springs early looking for a good deal, and many found them.
Art and Soul was doing brisk business because sale signs could be found everywhere you turned, not to mention the outside displays of merchandise. Tori Davidson works at the store.
"Everybody is participating, so they're going to say this is a good time to come to downtown Ocean Springs because everybody's got something going on," Davidson said. "So it's definitely a moneymaker for the whole downtown area this week."
Customers, like Bob and Anne Hawkins seemed to like the idea of a sidewalk sale.
"Well, it's a nice day to get out. It's not hot, and it's not raining very hard. So we just down to walk through our town."
The last few years have been nothing for retailers to write home about. They were hit particularly hard by the recession and last summer's oil spill. This sidewalk sale idea was a strategy that seemed to work. Lynn Lott is another downtown business owner.
"I'm always trying to draw more customers to downtown and just get our specials out there that we are having," Lott said.
Theresa Hicks sells artwork. The picture being painted on Saturday was a bright one, despite the clouds. She been very pleased with the turnout.
"They come out here to see what we have on the sidewalk, and then they come in the store," Hicks said.
But there is one tried and true secret to bottom line success on a day like this. People will always search out a good buy. Peter Grant knows that's the case at his men's clothing store.
"We put the entire store on sale, not just winter or summer merchandise," Grant said. "Everything's 20% off, sometimes 25%, some things even more, so it's the whole store."
This is the sixth year the Ocean Springs Chamber has sponsored the July Sidewalk Sale in downtown.
