GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A man of integrity and courage. That's how friends and family remember the late George County Sheriff Garry Welford. Thursday marked the one year anniversary of his tragic death in the line of duty.
Dozens of the people touched by Garry Welford; friends, family and law enforcers, gathered under a small tent at his gravesite to remember his kindness and courage.
"It is important that we never forget the sacrifices that are made in law enforcement because they are your protectors," Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said.
Those who came to celebrate Welford's life said for two terms the sheriff worked around the clock protecting the people of George County. He gave his life doing just that.
"I will never forget Garry," Byrd said.
"It is a great loss for me, and it hard to believe that this has occurred a year ago," Welford's friend, Ronnie Lambert said.
That loss is also deeply felt by his wife, Debbie Welford, and their children.
"He just had a way of turning things around and making life fabulous," Debbie Welford said about her husband of more than 30 years.
Remembering Welford's words of wisdom have been a comfort.
"He always had a saying, no matter how bad it was to always smile."
George County residents Brandy Williams and Christopher Baxter are charged with killing Welford. They both have pleaded not guilty.
