Proposed Margaritaville marina gets DMR approval

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Developers of the new Margaritaville Casino have received approval from the DMR to build a 27 slip marina as part of that project. That authorization was given at Tuesday's monthly meeting of the Commission on Marine Resources in Biloxi.

The marina will be built adjacent to the casino project, near the foot of 5th Street on Biloxi's Back Bay. A DMR coastal ecology representative told commissioners several other sites had been considered for the new marina.

"The applicant considered several properties along Highway 90, but because the water is susceptible to intense wave action from storms and the need for extensive dredging, those areas were eliminated," Jennifer Wittman said.

She said the developer considered other locations on Back Bay, but those were rejected because of issues like ownership complications or wetland concerns.

The marina still requires approval from the Department of Environmental Quality.
