Ex-Greene County official appeals conviction

HATTIESBURG, MS (AP) -

Former Greene County Supervisor Earnest Holder has appealed his federal conviction on multiple counts related to an alleged bribery scheme involving Hurricane Katrina debris removal contracts.

The 70-year-old Holder filed his appeal without an attorney, and must now hire one or choose to represent himself.

The Hattiesburg American reports Holder will take his case to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.

He was convicted in April in U.S. District Court in Hattiesburg of bribery, conspiracy to commit bribery, tax evasion and perjury.

The former supervisor was found guilty of conspiring with debris removal contractor Thomas Landon in a scheme that yielded $1 in illegal kickbacks for each cubic yard of debris the contractor removed from Holder's district following the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.
