Criss-crossing the world to make a difference

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - It's the first time it's ever been attempted but a man from Australian has made it his mission to run from one end of the earth to the other.  That's right from the North Pole to the South Pole.  He's doing it to raise money and awareness for a cause that we on the coast are very familiar with.  WLOX News caught up with the marathon runner as he passed through Bay St. Louis and Waveland.

Meet 49-year-old Pat Farmer.  The veteran marathon runner is on a history making journey not across country but across the world.  "It's the first time it's ever been attempted no one has ever run from one end of the earth to the other ever before." said Farmer.

It's a 13,000 mile journey.  So far, he's already traveled 2,500 miles. He runs about 52 miles a day, 7 days a week with no days off.

"I started on the 6th of April from the North Pole I was dropped off by Russian helicopter.  Obviously I was wearing different cloths when I was up through there. And then I made my way down the East Coast of Canada then down through America."

And as you can imagine trekking through the elements on foot can get tough.  "I've run through some of the most horrendous conditions that you can imagine from -45 degrees in and a 100 knot winds as I experienced in the North Pole through some of the jungles and the temperatures that I'm experiencing right now. "

The question is why is he doing it.  "For the American Red Cross and for the International Red Cross.

"People worldwide saw the devastation here in this region that cyclone Katrina, Hurricane Katrina had on the area and this area was supported worldwide and now I'm trying to say to all Americans to please support the Red Cross. "

Farmer, a former member of the Australian Parliament, says he chose the Red Cross because it's a non-political organization that helps anyone in need around the world.

"They are trusted by governments worldwide.  But what people don't realize is they need individuals help.  They need the help of the ordinary person on the streets. The American people are very, very good at supporting the world and they do it very well and they are respected for that.  But, I'm saying they need to look after themselves in this case and they need to support the American Red Cross."
