Graphic Day: Sowell family members, Cleveland Police drilled in court

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Thursday in Cleveland Strangler court, suspected serial killer Anthony Sowell's family took the stand followed by the man who reported Sowell's whereabouts and then Cleveland Police.

Throughout the day, jurors were shown graphic crime scene photos, including bodies found around the property.

Sowell's half-sister and nephew took the stand testifying about how being in the military changed Sowell and what happened the day police came to arrest Anthony.

Joe Veal, a citizen who recognized Sowell from news reports that he was wanted for murder, was next on the stand. He said he went to the Fourth District, flagged down two officers and told them he saw Sowell. He said "follow me" and led them to East 102nd Street. Sowell was there, officers told him to get on the ground, handcuffed him and took him into custody.

Cleveland Police Officer Charles Locke, Sowell's arresting officer took the stand as well as Cleveland Police Sgt Ron Ross and Cleveland Homicide Detective Melvin Smith.

During police testimony, graphic crime scene photos were shown to the jury, some of which included victims' bodies.

Sowell faces the death penalty if convicted of murdering eleven women. The bodies of the victims were found in and around Sowell's Imperial Avenue home in late 2009.
