Jackson Co. Boys & Girls Clubs struggle with finances

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Boys and Girls Clubs of Jackson County are facing declining enrollment numbers and money woes. So the non-profit is calling on South Mississippi to help support this safe haven for kids.

The executive director and board members are scrambling to find ways to keep the four clubs in the county running on a tight budget.

"We have lost two of the grants decreased by 50 percent," said Executive Director Catherine Glaude. "We rely heavily on grants, which is not a good thing. And myself and the board we do understand that."

Glaude also said attendance has dropped off by about 30 percent this summer.

"This shows were having some economic issues within our county, and when funds are low, it affects the day to day operations."

The Boys and Girls Club leaders said they are praying more than ever for people to dig deep in their pockets and donate cash for the kids.

"This is very cliche, but it is not the amount, it is the spirit of it," board member T. J. Golson said. "There is no minimum amount. It is giving of what you can give and every bit is appreciated."

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Jackson County will host its annual Steak and Steak Dinner on Thursday at the Civic Center in Pascagoula. If you'd like to buy a ticket, or just find out more about making a donation, call (228) 762-3497.
