The fire has burned the grass in the area near mile marker 53, that's between the Ocean Springs and Vancleave exits. Drivers on the interstate say the smoke brought traffic to a standstill for a while.
Doug Hunt with the Sand Hill Crane Refuge told WLOX News, "It was just a grass fire. It didn't get into the woods. We were lucky."
Though Hunt couldn't pinpoint what caused the fire, he said "with the extreme drought situation it wouldn't take much right now."
Any spark from a cigarette butt or a dragging chain could have been enough to ignite the dry grass, according to Hunt.
Burn bans remain in effect in the six southern counties due to the drought conditions.
