GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A salvage team managed to bring a piece of the Sandy Point's bow onto the surface of the Mississippi Sound on Sunday, June 12, 2011. The Sandy Point is a 163-foot pogy boat that sank in the Mississippi Sound last month after colliding with another boat. Salvage teams still need to pump water out of the hull before it can be lifted up onto a barge.
Representative with Omega Protein the company that owns the sunken fishing vessel said after the wreckage is put on a barge it will be handed over to the U.S. Coast Guard for inspection as part of the investigation into the accident that resulted in the death of three Omega Protein employees.
Omega Protein said it will probably be another few days before the remainder of the boat can be pulled from the sea floor.
