OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - The Mississippi Forestry Commission tells WLOX the massive fire that burned nearly 1,000 acres in Jackson County was set by people and not Mother Nature.
The fire broke out Saturday afternoon in the Ocean Springs Road area. Officials asked residents in several nearby neighborhoods to leave their homes as a precaution. The Sunplex Rehabilitation Center was also evacuated and its 59 nursing home patients and their records moved to other facilities.
Dispatch Supervisor Cathy Bond said the wildlife report lists the cause of the fire as incendiary. Bond says that means the fire was set either by human carelessness or arson. The case remains under investigation.
Officials said by Saturday night the fire was mostly contained. No homes were damaged.
WLOX will have more on this story later today.
