CAMP SHELBY, MS (WLOX) -

All Air Force Reserve Officer Training Cadets that were in the area of Wednesday's lightning strike have returned safely to Camp Shelby. They will continue their training.

Dozens of the cadets were sent to hospitals in the Hattiesburg area Wednesday after a lightning strike hit the training site. It happened around 2 p.m.

Officials said only two people had to be transported by ambulance. Four people were closest to the vicinity of the lightning strike. Most of the 77 cadets were taken by bus to be checked out by medical personnel.

The cadets are part of the Air Force's reserve officers training from various college campuses around the country.

Officials would not say whether the cadets were in a building or an open area, only that the cadets were in a forward training base similar to what soldiers would face in Afghanistan.
