Ocean Springs celebrates Red, White & Blueberries

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Blueberries are delicious by themselves, but who knew the fruit could also be the main ingredient in so many tasty dishes? Saturday, Ocean Springs hosted its annual Red, White & Blueberry Festival.

It was a chance for area growers to sell blueberries and blueberry bushes, and an opportunity for local restaurants to show off their best blueberry inspired cuisine. The public got to sample blueberry lemonade, blueberry brownies, and vanilla ice cream covered in, yes, blueberries.

Ocean Springs Chamber officials said the event wasn't just about satisfying the public's sweet tooth.

"When we did the samplings, we were worried that they would all be desserts," said Ocean Springs Chamber Director Margaret Miller. "From Corner Cafe, we had a wonderful dessert that was made from blueberries called Blueberry Crunch. Of course, we give the recipes away and it promotes the restaurants. We also had the salad with the Cheese/Blueberry Vinaigrette from Epicure. We had Porter Avenue Bistro here with a wonderful chicken wings with a blueberry sauce."

The Ocean Springs Chamber began selling a new cookbook called "Mississippi Hometown." It features some of the recipes of dishes served at the Blueberry festival.
