Drunk driving accident kills Jackson County woman

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A late night drunk driving accident has claimed the life of a Jackson County woman, according to Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd.  Harleston resident Shelly Pierce died at the USA Medical Center in Alabama from injuries sustained in the one-car accident.

Byrd tells WLOX that around 1:30 Saturday morning, the Sheriff's Department received a call about an accident in the Harleston community, north of Hurley, where Pierce's van struck a tree.

Byrd says that the 41-year-old was at a bar drinking heavily earlier that night.  The sheriff reported that the bartender had to cut Pierce off, and she was given a ride home with a friend.

According to the investigation, when Pierce arrived home, she got into a domestic dispute with her husband. Pierce then left her home, driving a white van.

Shortly after leaving her home, Byrd said the woman drove 300 feet off the main road and struck a large pecan tree.  Pierce was then airlifted to USA Medical Center where she was declared dead a few hours later.

Byrd said both speed and alcohol were factors in the accident.
