GREENE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A former East Central student and quarterback was killed in a car wreck Thursday around 9 a.m.
The Greene County Sheriff's Department said 16-year-old D.J. Hugger was riding in the passenger's seat when he was ejected from the vehicle. Hugger's brother was driving and lost control of the vehicle. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Hugger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chief Deputy Churchwell said Hugger was not wearing a seatbelt, which would have saved his life.
According to Hugger's former East Central Coach, Gary Long, the teen played quarterback when he was in 8th grade.
"Several of his former team mates went to Leakesville today," Long said. "He still has a lot of family and friends here."
Churchwell said Hugger was set to start next school year as a quarterback for Greene County High School.
