DEER ISLAND, MS (WLOX) - The fireball that consumed parts of Deer Island is not as intense as it was on Wednesday night. Officially, there's no word from the Department of Marine Resources about what ignited the brush along the island's east end. But officials say no one is in harm's way.
Department of Marine Resources Spokesperson Lauren Thompson said it's a wildfire, and is not a threat to public safety. Thompson said DMR responded to the fire and searched the area and there was no threat to anyone or anything.
She said the fire will eventually put itself out, and they have seen other fires on the island.
The blaze could be seen for miles Wednesday night. Ocean Springs Photographer Jay Twilbeck captured this shot from corner of East Beach and Holcomb Boulevard.
