Ship Island sprint for thrill seekers

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Thrill-seekers took their sailboats into the Mississippi Sound Saturday. The Ocean Springs Yacht Club hosted the 36th Annual Slip to Ship Regatta.

The regatta included several races including a 13 mile sprint to Ship Island.

Organizers say the two-person teams came from several different states to get in the competition, and this competition is all about skill.

"These boats are nothing but rocket ships on the water. For those people who know about mono hull or single hull boats, they're great boats; they're comfortable boats and they get some great speed," Commodore Ken Altman said. "These are all about flying on the edge, and at any moment, you're between going 15 and 17 knots on the water and flipping over. And that's the key to racing catamaran; you're right in that balance of going really fast and losing control."

Organizers say there were about 40 entries in Saturday's competition.
