OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Good news for boaters in Ocean Springs. The Gulf Coast Research Lab Boat Launch at the corner of East Beach Drive and Halstead Road will be open in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
The City of Ocean Springs made the announcement Tuesday. The hope is with another launch open in the city, there will be less traffic on Front Beach Drive from boaters.
"This will relieve some congestion at the Ocean Springs Harbor," said GCRL Director Dr. William Hawkins.
WLOX's Doug Walker first reported on the harbor congestion earlier this month. (Click here to read his original story.)
The GCRL boat launch will be open to the public beginning Friday, May 27, at 6pm until Tuesday, May 31 at 6am. After that, it will be open to the public on state holidays and each weekend from Fridays at 6pm until Mondays at 6am.
"The Board of Aldermen and I appreciate the partnership with the University of Southern Mississippi to make this valuable asset available to our boaters," said Mayor Connie Moran.
