GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The search for two missing fishermen from the sunken Sandy Point fishing vessel were recovered Sunday.
An independent dive team recovered the bodies that have been missing since the Sandy Point collided with another vessel on Wednesday.
According to statement by Omega Protein Inc., the company that owns the fishing vessel, the two missing fishermen's bodies were turned into the Harrison County Coroner's office to conduct autopsies on all three of the fishermen that died in Wednesday's collision.
Omega Protein stated that they have work crews on Ship Island removing fish that washed ashore as a result of the sinking of the Sandy Point.
Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said that the cause of death for all three fishermen was drowning. Hargrove added that an air horn blasted for 15 seconds and the bodies were covered with an American flag from past sunken ships as the bodies were recovered. Hargrove said the air horn and the American flag were used to honor the fishermen.
