GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Dangerous dive conditions around the sunken pogey boat "Sandy Point" prompted the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources to suspend diving operations on Friday.
DMR Enforcement Chief Walter Chataginer told WLOX News one of the divers became entangled in the fishing nets which had drifted over the sunken wreckage. The diver managed to free himself without injury, but that caused the team to cease the dive operation for safety concerns.
Chief Chataginer said it's likely that salvage operations will begin soon. A marine contractor will likely be hired to raise the sunken fishing boat from the 25 feet of water its resting in.
