Former Waveland officers file suit over layoffs

WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - Four former Waveland Police officers have filed a lawsuit against the city. The suit was brought was against the city by mid-management level employees who were let go in January due to the city's budget woes.

The suit filed in circuit court claims the officers were wrongfully terminated and were denied due process.

Former Assistant Police Chief Mike Prendergast, Patrol Supervisor Brett Ladner, Captain Mac Cowand and Chief Investigator Howard Parker are asking for an appeal hearing before the city's civil service commission. So far, they say their requests have been ignored.

City Attorney Gary Yarbough told WLOX News a hearing isn't required for budgetary layoffs.

A total of 11 full time city employees were laid off in January. A week and a half ago, 3 more employees received pink slips.
