Paddling down the Wolf River

LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) -

If you've never taken the opportunity to see the Wolf River for yourself, Joe Feil may convince you to do just that.

"The Wolf, of course, is Mississippi's first designated scenic stream and it's probably most noted for the beautiful white sand beaches. You know it's just an amazingly beautiful river."

Feil founded Wolf River Canoe and Kayak nearly 30 years ago. According to Feil, a relaxing trip down the sleepy river is perfect for families looking for something to do this summer in south Mississippi.

"A lot of people like to bring their kids out and spend a day or a half a day or do a short trip on the river.  Some people like to do a little tubing. We do have short little tube floats. But mostly it's canoeing and kayaking."

And it's easy to see why.  There's plenty to feast your eyes on as you paddle down the river, surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Feil said it doesn't matter if you aren't very experienced on the water.

"You know quite honestly, for a lot of people, they're not doing this everyday or anything like that. And for a lot of people, their time on the river is a little more time outdoors, perhaps a little more exercise than they're used to getting every day. They seem to really enjoy that and come back and do it again."

He believes many families forget about the Wolf River, our own little hidden jewel.

"Yeah, it is. It's just amazing to have this so close to the rest of the entire Gulf Coast that you have this opportunity, to enjoy this type of activity."
