Bower Names Freshman Damion Carter As The Starting Quarterback

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) _ Damion Carter came on five minutes into the fourth quarter against
Nebraska Thursday night, completing his first six passes and finishing 14-for-17 for 143 yards and a touchdown.

``Damion's performance in that game earned him the opportunity,'' coach Jeff Bower said Friday after a team practice. ``I really don't have any doubts about starting a true freshman. You saw him. He showed more poise in the game than probably any freshman quarterback I've ever seen.''

Several players were slowed in Friday's afternoon workout by ``bumps and bruises'' acquired in Thursday's game.

Junior running back Timmy Blackwell injured an ankle in the game and will be evaluated over the weekend.
