Storm deaths in Mississippi increase

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - Mississippi's death toll now stands at 33 from this week's violent storms. Thousands of structures are damaged. Gov. Haley Barbour says he's asking President Barack Obama for a federal disaster declaration for the entire state.

In the small town of Smithville, there are now 14 deaths. The town of 900, in Monroe County, was the hardest-hit Mississippi community from storms that pounded the South on Wednesday.

National Guard troops are on duty in Smithville, where the governor says they are working with state and local emergency agencies continue assessing damage.

Authorities say 32 people were killed in Mississippi Wednesday and one was killed Tuesday.

Power crews from South Mississippi headed north Thursday morning to help restore power. Singing River Electric deployed 14 linemen to the Columbus area.
