Two hitchhikers sentenced in hotel death case

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

What started as a capital murder case two years ago in Harrison County has now been downgraded to manslaughter, and settled before ever going to court.

District Attorney Cono Caranna told WLOX News the two hitchhikers accused of attacking a Vancleave man at the Crystal Inn off I-10 and Canal Road pleaded guilty to the lesser manslaughter charges during a pretrial hearing Tuesday. The trial for David Lee Obermiller, 23, and Bethany Nichole Goodenough, 22, was supposed to start Monday.

Obermiller was sentenced to 35 years in prison, Goodenough to 30 years. The two are blamed for the death of Thomas Corbin, 51, who died of a heart attack after the May 2009 assault.
