GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Gulfport baseball team is poised to make a run at the state championship. But when the season ends, the Admirals will begin the search for a new head coach.

In an email to parents, Tim Dowdy says he's leaving Gulfport High for the assistant principal job at Ridgeland High School. Dowdy was the Ridgeland Rangers' head baseball coach from 2002-2006.

Dowdy informed the Admiral players Tuesday in a team meeting, telling them,"they aren't losing a coach, they are gaining a biggest fan."

Dowdy spent three seasons in the dugout with the Admirals.

Gulfport takes on Pascagoula in the 2nd round of the Class 6A playoffs. Game 1 is Friday night at Gulfport at 6 PM.
