Visitors praise Ocean Springs front beach transformation

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

It has quickly become one of the most popular recreation spots on the coast.

The Front Beach around Fort Maurepas Park in Ocean Springs is attracting plenty of families with children, exercise walkers and pet owners. And the next new addition to the area, just in time for summer, will be a concession tent

The explorer I'berville, whose statute looks over Front Beach from Fort Maurepas Park, would likely be amazed at all the activity along this shore line. Walkers, bike riders, children and fishermen. All are enjoying the transformation of this beach front.

"I love it. It used to be just an eye attraction. Now you can actually come up here and enjoy it. It's nice for the dogs. They made it dog friendly with the clean-up stations. A lot more room to actually walk on the beach as well. So, I like it a lot," said Ocean Springs resident Seth Patrick.

"I like walking and the water and the breeze. In the summertime, it's always a breeze down here," said Bill Patrick.

"We love it. We've loved it from the beginning," added Glenda Patrick, "There's all sorts of activities going on all the time and we love to walk."

Parents and grandparents can't say enough about the new playground equipment which adjoins the pavilion.

"It's beautiful weather. It's Good Friday. We have the day off work and thought we'd bring the kids down here," said Ryan Forey from Biloxi.

Sunshine and that ever-present breeze off the water certainly help make this spot an enjoyable getaway.

Along with the walkway and park, fishing piers also attract visitors.

Coming soon, and just in time for the summer season, a concession tent will be set up on front beach in front of Fort Maurepas. Just this week, the Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen approved a part time seasonal hire to staff that tent.

"It's the first time I've been down here since right after Katrina," said John Lambert of D'Iberville, "I think it's beautiful.  They've done a great job with it."

Another new addition will be landscaping along the walkway.  Bids for that project go out next week.

There are a lot of activities coming up at Fort Maurepas Park. The annual Landing of D'Iberville re-enactment will be held the afternoon of May first, followed by a concert and then fireworks.

There's also a volleyball tournament coming soon to Front Beach.
