GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) - If you see smoke over Gautier or Vancleave Wednesday, don't be alarmed. This time the fire is a controlled burn by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Workers with the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge plan to burn an area east of Gautier-Vancleave Road, and north of I-10.
Refuge staff will maintain fire breaks around the refuge. But there's a chance roads in the area may be temporarily closed for safety reasons. The refuge visitor center and Dees trail will be closed for the day.
Burning to remove hazardous fuels is part of the Fish and Wildlife Service's mission. The fire will also help restore the native wet pine savannah.
