MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - An undisclosed amount of teachers in Moss Point will be laid off for the upcoming school year due to budget restrictions.
On Friday, Superintendent Kim Staley sent an e-mail to faculty and staff members of the Moss Point School District.
In the letter he said, "The Moss Point School District made a tough decision yesterday to apply the Reduction in Force Policy for 2011-2012 school year due to projected funding issues. Many of you will receive a written letter today notifying you of your status of employment..."
The letter went on to say "Once the district receives its funding allocation notice from the State of Mississippi, we will notify those of you, if any, who might be approved to return for the 2011-2012 school year."
Superintendent Kim Staley has refused to comment on the scope of the layoffs.
He did tell WLOX that Friday was the deadline to notify teachers that their contracts would not be renewed, however according to the superintendents of the Biloxi School District and the Hancock County School District, that deadline has been extended because the Governor hasn't signed the budget bill yet.
