GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) - A woods fire in Jackson County has now jumped across Highway 90, as firefighters continue their work to contain it.
According to fire service officials, the blaze started south of the highway, between 90 and Old Spanish Trail. Because of the remote location, officials are suspicious about how it started.
About 10 acres have burned south of 90 and fire fighters are still working to control the burn north of 90. Unfortunately, low humidity combined with plenty of fuel like certain plants and dry grass are factors that make it easy for the fire to spread.
Traffic on 90 east of 57 is being directed by law enforcement because smoke is causing low visibility.
Firefighters from Gautier, Fontainebleau, the Mississippi Forestry Commission, and the Sand Hill Crane Refuge are all working the fire.
