Special athletes will compete in the Special Olympics

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - We are a little more than a month away from the Special Olympics Mississippi State Summer Games at Keesler Air Force Base. To get the community ready for the annual showcase of grit and determination, Special Olympics organizers hosted their annual kickoff luncheon.

The summer games are the weekend of May 13-15 at the Biloxi air base. Hundreds of special athletes from all over Mississippi will compete in a variety of competitions. As is the case every year, Keesler students will assist the athletes every way they can.

According to the Special Olympics website, the summer games will include the pageantry and excitement of the Olympics Games, with events, such as; Opening & Closing Ceremonies, the lighting of the Special Olympics Flame of Hope, Awards Ceremonies, and a variety of cultural activities.

Today's kickoff lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Bay Breeze Event Center on the grounds of Keesler Air Force Base.
