Jackson Co. collects household hazardous waste Saturday

GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) - It's easy to be "green" at Jackson County's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday. Whether it's old paint, mothballs, pool chemicals or bug spray, county officials want to keep chemicals from ending up in landfills or being dumped down the drain.

The county will accept 40 different types of household hazardous chemicals ranging from anti-freeze to wood finish (see the complete list below). There's no charge for Jackson County residents to drop off hazardous chemicals from 8 a.m. - Noon at Singing River Mall's parking lot in Gautier.

"This collection day is the ideal way to do some spring cleaning and be good to the environment," Ronda Powell, Jackson County's Solid Waste Director explains.

"This event is the best way to properly dispose of those unwanted household products labeled-poisonous, toxic, flammable, or corrosive."

The collection day will be held rain or shine at the east end of the mall's parking lot. The drop off line will begin on the north side of the mall off Dolphin Road.

"The drop off line makes going green so easy, drivers don't even have to get out of their vehicles," said event volunteer Tiffany Jackson. "You just drive up, tell us what you've brought, and volunteers unload everything for you."

Before loading items in a vehicle, remember to keep products in the original containers. Make sure the containers are sealed and not leaking. Transport containers in the trunk or in the back of the vehicle away from passengers. As a safety precaution, don't transport more than five gallons or 50 pounds of hazardous items at one time.

"This will be the only hazardous waste collection day the county will hold in 2011. So bring us those left over chemicals that always seem to be hiding under your sink or in the back of your shed," Powell said.

There are several items that will not be accepted including: electronic appliances, explosive or radioactive materials, medical or biological waste, business waste, household garbage or compressed cylinders. There is a five tire limit as well.

The Household Hazardous Collection Day has won two state wide awards and is funded by the Jackson County Board of Supervisors, Mississippi DEQ and the cities of Moss Point, Pascagoula, Gautier, and Ocean Springs.
