Long Beach man reportedly died in Blue Hole

LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - Authorities say Damon Eugene Davenport went fishing late Wednesday morning in a canoe that belonged to friend.  Suddenly, that friend reportedly heard Davenport yelling for help.

He disappeared in what's called the Blue Hole, an old dirt pit south of Interstate 10 that's become a popular fishing spot.  Davenport's friend told authorities he spotted the canoe full of water and the victim's hat floating in the water.

At just before noon, the Harrison County Fire Service Dive Team responded to the Blue Hole.  So did Gulfport's dive team, and the Harrison County Search and Rescue team.  They eventually found Davenport's body in the manmade lake.

According to Harrison County's coroner, an autopsy will be done Thursday to determine how the 57-year-old died.
