Lawmakers kill D'Iberville's 2 percent tax proposal

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

City Planner Jeff Taylor said the city's referendum for a 2 percent food and beverage tax failed in a House Committee this week.

"What's most disappointing is that the proposal died before residents could even get an opportunity to vote on it," Taylor said.

This loss comes as a blow to the $17 million D'Iberville hoped to generate from taxes. The money would have been used to develop several downtown and waterfront projects.

The city was looking to construct a new sports facility and a police and fire complex.

Despite the loss, Taylor said the city will draft a new referendum to present to lawmakers again next year.
