Severe weather rips roof off Gulfport business

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The severe weather that ripped through south Mississippi Monday night caused quite a mess in an Orange Grove shopping center. High winds tore the roof off of Morgan's Hardware in Norwood Shopping Village.

Debris from the roof's infrastructure was scattered hundreds of feet away from the business across the parking lot. But the majority of the massive roof lie mangled and torn between the hardware store and a neighboring business, Harrison Finance.

In fact, part of the roof actually landed on top of Harrison Finance, causing minimal roof damage to that building, as well. No one was injured.

Harrison County was one of four south Mississippi counties under a tornado warning Monday night. The last warning expired at 9:15 p.m.

The damage to the hardware store was the most severe reported in south Mississippi. WLOX also received reports of damage to the concession stand at the Lizana ballpark.

There are also reports of downed trees throughout the six coastal counties. Fortunately, no reports of any injuries in south Mississippi. However, that storm system has been blamed for six deaths, one in Mississippi.

A Copiah County man was killed late Monday after a tree fell on his vehicle in the Hopewell community. In Georgia, four people were killed, including a father and son who died when a tree fell on a home. The other death occurred in Tennessee.
