Fallen officers to be honored in Pascagoula

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Three Pascagoula Police officers who died in the line of duty will be honored in the city they protected.

A portion of U.S. Highway 90 in Pascagoula will be dedicated to Patrolmen Terry Michael Byrd, Jeffery Rugheimer, and Major Nathaniel Smith Jr. All three were involved in motorcycle accidents while on patrol.

Terry Michael Byrd is the son of Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd.

Sheriff Byrd says this is a tremendous honor for his son, because of his sacrifice and service. "It is very, very humbling," the sheriff said. "I want to thank Tom King, who was the senator who brought the bill to the legislature for them to pass it. I want to thank the city of Pascagoula for finally stepping up to the plate. Ya know, it has been five years. It is one of those things you need to do because law enforcement officers are your first line of defense."

Terry Michael Byrd will be honored April 28th. Rugheimer and Smith will be honored in separate ceremonies at a later date.
