OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - A major housing development in Ocean Springs originally given a thumbs down by the city is getting a second look.
On Tuesday the Board of Aldermen will reconsider a request to rezone 40 acres on Highway 90. The area runs from Gibson Street to the Church of Christ on the south side of Bienville Boulevard.
Louisiana developer, Bui Nguyen, said he wants to build 300 multi family units on the western parcel covering 15.8 acres. The multi-family portion of the project will provide 600 parking spaces or two per unit.
Plans also call for another 44 single family homes on 16.6 acres. Documents show the smallest single family lot would be 5,028 square feet. Each house would have a two-car garage.
Alderman Matt McDonnell said the original request was denied because the board was asked to rezone the area without knowing what the change was for and what the development is going to be like.
McDonnell said he thinks Ocean Springs needs more multifamily housing but it must be done in a way that's beneficial to the city.
