Tessa, the Cincinnati Zoo's four-year-old Maasai giraffe has given birth to her first calf.

The baby giraffe was born on Saturday at 9:40 a.m. in Tessa's indoor stall. The birth marks the first time in almost 26 years that a giraffe has been born at the Cincinnati Zoo.

According to Zoo officials, Tessa became restless around 5 a.m. on Saturday and, shortly thereafter, the zoo veterinarian was called in.

Soon after delivery, Tessa began licking her calf and the calf first attempted to stand around 10 a.m.

The sex of the calf is still unknown.

The Cincinnati Zoo was the first zoo in the Western Hemisphere to have a giraffe born in captivity, back in 1889.
