Biloxi's gateway is ready for a makeover

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Could an amphitheater, a shopping district and a boardwalk be coming to Biloxi's Point Cadet? Those concepts have been proposed by students from Tulane's Regional Urban Design Center.

Tonight, Biloxi residents saw the vision of the Tulane designers. Their proposals could become the cornerstone of a Point Cadet revitalization.

The eastern tip of the Biloxi peninsula is considered one of the most valuable areas in the city. Biloxi leaders say redeveloping the point is essential because the waterfront land is the gateway to the city.

This is not the first time Biloxi has seen plans to develop the Point Cadet area. Years ago, the city established the Point Cadet Redevelopment Commission. But most of the ideas proposed by that commission never materialized.

Elizabeth Vowell is covering the public hearing, where Biloxians are getting their first look at what Point Cadet could become. You'll see the concepts on WLOX News at 10, and on WLOX.com.
