D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - A lifelong friendship ended in tragedy in the early Tuesday morning hours. One friend is dead and the other is in police custody for murder.

Eric Midkiff, 17, died just after midnight. Ethan Smith, 21, is being charged with Midkiff's murder.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Midkiff was shot in the head and died at Biloxi Regional Hospital.

The shooting happened in the Forest Cove subdivision in a small trailer behind the 513 Marigold Drive residence in D'Iberville. Emergency crews responded, gave CPR to the victim and took him to the hospital. He was dead on arrival at Biloxi Regional.

There were five people in the trailer when the shooting occurred.

The suspect, Smith, initially claimed it was an accident. When the police arrived on the scene, studied the evidence and talked to the witnesses, they realized immediately it was no accident.

Police did say alcohol was involved.

Jeff Lawson was on the scene and will have a more on WLOX News, including a warning from a police officer to the victim just weeks ago.

D'Iberville Chief of Police Wayne Payne said this is the department's first homicide case since its inception October 1, 2008.
